Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then found many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials state initial examinations indicate the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.

"There is still no lead as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have requested to the residents for details.

An important political figure stated the incident made him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.

"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right attack in 2020," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
