European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
