The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Change Follows Lukewarm Feedback

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a distinct direction.

The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to better meet community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

The news echoes a comparable action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:

Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the need for a clearer vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to mind and revamped the title with a renewed direction - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our fans.

The belief in this project strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. After some time of discussions, he starts with us on next week.

His management and background in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known series in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in greeting him soon. We are all excited to continue seeing the development of the game in the months to come.

The President

Background of the New Head

Brinkman presently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Concept

The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Face the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and tests that evolve every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and pray your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."

The game does not have an official launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as creation continues.
