Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
